Home Studio

A Life Skills challenge where students build a band from things around the house and record their own theme tune.

Home Studio is an independent Life Skills challenge where students turn everyday objects into a band and record their own 16-bar theme tune (about 40 seconds). No instruments or music experience needed. Just a microphone, whatever is around the house, and a willingness to experiment.

What Your Child Does

  1. Sound Hunt. They search the house for 10 different sounds, like bangs, shakes, plucks, hums, scrapes, and rings, and record each one. For every sound, they note the object that made it, the room it came from, what kind of sound it is, and whether it's high, middle, or low. Then they can find up to 3 bonus sounds, with no pots, pans, or spoons.

  2. Build the Band. They pick 3 or more objects to be their band, build or change at least one, and write what didn't work at first. Photos of the objects are optional.

  3. Make the Track. They play their band again and record a beat, a texture, and a theme, one row at a time, in a simple studio inside the platform.

  4. Fresh Ears. They listen back, then make draft 2 better by redoing a row or adding a new one, and say what they changed.

  5. Finish and Send. They name the track, make a cover, write a short Studio Note, and film a band roll call. Then they submit everything to their guide.

The One Rule

Every sound has to come from something in the house, or your child's own voice. No real instruments, apps, or downloaded sounds.

The limit is the point. It pushes students to find sounds nobody else thought of.

The Skills It Builds

Home Studio is a Creativity challenge. Students practice coming up with lots of ideas before picking the best ones, making something great inside tight limits, and improving their own work after a fresh listen.

🌟The skill they show: "I can brainstorm many ideas first, then focus on the best ones."

What You Need

  • A computer with a microphone and camera

  • Objects from around the house. The kitchen, bathroom and garage are all fair game.

  • Headphones (optional). They make recording easier, and wired ones work best.

  • About 3 sittings, at your child's own pace. It can all be done in one day, and work saves as they go.

How You Can Help

  • Be the audience, not the producer. Please don't build it for them. Figuring it out is the skill.

  • Say yes to the kitchen drawers. Most of the best sounds are hiding in there.

  • Ask for a listen. Hearing what they have so far is the best encouragement.

  • Answer any basic questions on how different sounds are made, or things like rhythm and pitch.

Rewards

Every step earns Stardust when your child tries it. Redoing a part never costs anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need to know anything about music?

No. The studio keeps time for them, and built-in helpers suggest rhythms and tunes if they get stuck.

Do they need headphones?

No. Headphones make recording easier, but the studio works without them.

Can they use their voice?

Yes. They can sing, hum, or beatbox on top. Their band still has to be made of objects, and it needs to be heard in the track.

Who can hear my child's track?

Once they submit it, you get a family link to hear it. It only goes on Home Studio Radio after their guide checks it and you say OK.

Does sending it mean they passed?

No. Their guide reviews the whole package and gives feedback. Sending it doesn't automatically pass the challenge.

What if they get stuck?

Each step has hints and Helpers, and Alphie can help. Hints nudge with a question or an idea to try. They never hand over the answer.
