Membean is an adaptive vocabulary program for grades 6–12, designed to teach words for long-term retention rather than quick recognition. A one-time calibration sets your child's starting level, then short, timed training sessions teach each word through definitions, audio, example sentences, and memory hooks. Membean spaces every word out over about a month, revisiting it until it's truly mastered and marked “Ready.”
How to log in
Apps in TimeBack log in automatically as standard. If the automatic login doesn't work, follow the steps below.
You can sign in with a username and password if the auto-sign-in doesn't work. TimeBack shows the credentials right before the app opens, ready to copy and paste.
Open TimeBack: Sign in to TimeBack with your child's student email and find the “Vocabulary - Membean” course on your “Home.”
Click Jump In: Open the "Vocabulary - Membean" course and click Jump In. Your child's Membean username and password appear just before the app launches; copy them.
Sign in to Membean: You will be auto-logged in. If you are not, paste copied credentials into the Membean login page.
Run the Calibration Test (first time): On the first login, press “Start Calibration” to set the starting level. After that, each visit opens to a training session.
The first session: a calibration test
The very first time your child opens Membean, they press “Start Calibration” to take a one-time placement test.
Membean shows a series of words and asks whether your child knows each one, but some aren't real words, so they should choose “Know” only for words they genuinely recognize.
Honesty matters here: calibration sets the starting level, and that level can't be changed once it's set. If unsure about a word, click “I don't know.”
When calibration is finished, Membean builds a personalized word-training plan, and your child is ready to start training.
How a training session works
Press “Start Training” to begin. Each session is timed, and your child can choose how long to practice; a good rhythm is about 10 minutes daily, or 15 minutes every few days.
A session mixes word explanations (definitions, audio pronunciation, example sentences, and memory hooks), spelling exercises (typing the word they hear), and vocabulary questions on meaning and usage.
Let the timer run for the chosen length and keep answering until the session ends; that's what records the training.
Membean uses spaced repetition: each word comes back several times over about a month until it's fully mastered and marked “Ready.” Words your child finds tricky are automatically brought back more often, no manual reassignment needed.
How XP works
XP is awarded at the end of each training session, based on that session's accuracy. Your child earns:
0.75 XP for every new word studied correctly.
0.3 XP for every question answered correctly.
25% XP bonus for getting 100% accuracy in the session.
The catch worth knowing: a session below 80% accuracy earns 0 XP, so careful, focused answering pays off. The daily target is 10 XP, and it appears in TimeBack's Learning Metrics within about five minutes of finishing.
Habits that lead to success
Don't rush: take time to understand each question before answering.
Check spelling carefully before submitting an answer.
On definition questions, think about why the other options are wrong.
Don't guess: use the memory hook and example sentences to reason out the answer.
Train several times a week and revisit your Words Learned to keep them fresh.
How to tell it's working
Words moving into the “Ready” (fully mastered) list, and a steady 10 XP a day, are the clearest signs of progress. On the Membean dashboard, “All Words Learned” sorts every word into Started Learning, Good Progress, Almost Ready and Ready, while TimeBack's Learning Metrics rings show XP, time and accuracy.
If your child is consistently under 10 XP a day, it usually means missed practice or rushing (remember, a session under 80% earns nothing); steady, focused sessions rather than cramming are what move the words to Ready.
