Math Cakes is a supporting math app for grades 2–4 that teaches the standard algorithms for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to mastery, one step at a time. It runs alongside your child's base math course (Zearn in the early grades, Math Academy from Grade 4) as extra practice, and opens with its own placement test that starts your child at exactly the right skill.
How to log in
Apps in TimeBack log in automatically as standard. If the automatic login doesn't work, follow the steps below.
You can sign in with the single sign-on option; there's no separate username or password to remember.
Open TimeBack: Sign in to TimeBack and find the "Math - Math Cakes" course on the “Home” page.
Click Jump In - Open the Math Cakes course and press Jump In to launch it.
Sign in to Math Cakes: You will be auto-logged in. If you are not, click the "login with TimeBack" button.

The first time you log in to Math Raiders, you are brought directly to the intro.
Next Up: Click and follow the onscreen instructions to complete a placement test.

Students start with an unguided placement test that adapts to their answers in real time, locking in their precise starting level.
Smooth Transition to Learning
Once placement is complete, the app seamlessly transitions into tutorials at their starting point, using easy early wins to build confidence and app familiarity. This gentle ramp-up ensures students are motivated and ready when they reach their ideal level of challenge.
How lessons work
The shelf shows a row of desserts; the selected cake is always your child's next activity.
A new skill opens with a guided tutorial: a panda character walks through the algorithm step by step, and your child types answers directly into the correct place-value column (Hundreds, Tens, Ones).
After the tutorial, practice mode unlocks, with unlimited questions on that skill within a time limit.
Solving 80% or more of a practice (or bonus) round earns XP for that round; once your child scores high enough in practice, the skill's mastery test is scheduled for the next day.
If your child shows quick mastery of a topic, the app may speed through it with fewer prompts (a “skip cycle”). Most students won't see this, since the placement test is designed to start them at the right level already.
When the mastery test unlocks
When your child masters a skill's practice in Math Cakes, its mastery test doesn't open right away - it becomes available the following day, shown as a countdown (for example, “Test unlocks in 14:48:38”).
This next-day gap is intentional: it checks that the material stuck overnight, not just in the moment. While the timer is running, your child can keep practicing the same skill and earning XP, and the mastery test unlocks automatically once the countdown reaches zero.
How XP works
Math Cakes has its own daily goal: 10 XP a day, typically around 5-6 practice rounds. Lesson XP varies by lesson based on the required work and expected time to reach 80% accuracy. XP values typically range from ~5 to ~18 XP per skill.
Each practice (or bonus) round earns 2 XP once your child solves 80% or more of that round's questions.
One rule worth knowing: XP is awarded only the first time a lesson is completed; replaying an already-completed lesson won't earn more.
How your child advances
Math Cakes moves your child through its own fixed sequence of skills, addition and subtraction first, then multiplication and division as their grade allows, passing each skill's mastery test to unlock the next. Completed lessons fill the dessert gallery, a visual record of progress alongside the daily XP goal.
Habits that lead to success
Watch the tutorial demo closely, and press replay if something isn't clear.
Take your time on practice problems and read each question carefully.
Use feedback right away; after 3 incorrect key presses or an incorrect answer submission, the oven closes and progress pauses; slow down and work through the guided problem before trying again.
Stay focused; avoid switching tabs during practice.
If it isn't listed under the “Home” tab that day, there's nothing extra to do.
How to tell it's working
Signs of good progress: the shelf and dessert gallery steadily filling up, and ~10 XP earned per day. If a student seems stuck, watch for random guessing or button-mashing instead of working through the algorithm steps, or skipping past the panda's tutorial instructions.
