Freckle is a supporting language app for grades 3–10 (it runs on Renaissance) that gives your child adaptive practice on the skills their teacher assigns. Lessons appear as cards under “From My Teacher”, your child works them one at a time, with help tools and read-aloud, mastering each skill by scoring 80% or higher. Difficulty adjusts to keep the challenge at the right level.
How to log in
Apps in TimeBack log in automatically as standard. If the automatic login doesn't work, follow the steps below.
Freckle signs in with a username and password (it runs on Renaissance) rather than single sign-on. TimeBack shows the credentials right before it launches, and you'll choose “I'm a Student.”
Open TimeBack: Find "Language - Freckle" under the “Home” tab.
Click Jump In: A pop-up shows your child's username, password, and a link to launch Freckle.
Sign in as a student: On the Renaissance-Freckle login screen, choose “I'm a Student,” then enter the credentials from TimeBack.
Getting Started
When you log in to Renaissance, you are brought directly to a new home screen. Under the Practice section, you will see the Freckle icon. Click on the Freckle button to launch Freckle
Once Freckle opens, you’ll have the class select screen (shown below), where you’ll have to select A.Guide:
After, you’ll arrive at your student dashboard with different cards. Click on “From My Teacher.” and your activities will appear here.
If you have more than one assignment, always start with the top or top-left card and move from left to right.
Click Start on the first lesson you haven’t completed yet.
If you’ve already started a lesson, click Continue to keep going.
You can only work on one skill at a time.
How a lesson works
Click Start on the first lesson not yet done, or Continue to resume one. After clicking Start, the lesson will appear on the screen.
Understanding Your Lesson Screen
Each Freckle lesson has different parts to help you work and learn successfully.
A - Progress Bar
At the top of your screen, you’ll see the lesson name and a progress bar. This shows how many questions you’ve completed and how many are left. Keep an eye on it - when the bar is full, your lesson is done!
B - Question Area
This is where the question appears. Read it carefully before you choose your answer. You can also click the sound icon 🔊 to have the question read out loud.
C - Answer Choices
At the bottom, you’ll see boxes with possible answers. Click the box that shows your answer.If you get it right, you’ll move on to the next question.
If not, Freckle will give you a hint. Make sure to read it carefully; it will help you figure out the correct answer.
D - Help Tools
On the right side, you’ll see buttons that can help if you’re unsure about the correct answer. On Language skills, you will see this:

Once you finish all the questions in your lesson, a screen will appear to show your results and how you did on your practice.
If you score 80% or above in the quiz, click Next to continue and return to your From My Teacher page.
If you score below 80% in the quiz, click ‘Try again’ to restart the quiz and aim for 80% or higher to show you’ve mastered it! If you skip the retry, don’t worry; we’ll reassign the quiz so you can try again.
After a lesson, Freckle sometimes asks, “Do you want to spend coins?” with a “Go to the store” button. Your child should not open the store, just click “Skip” to return to the dashboard and continue.
How XP works
Each time you complete lessons and answer questions, you earn XP.
You earn XP when your accuracy for the skill is 80% or above. You earn 1 XP for every question you answer correctly.
The more correct answers you get, the more XP you earn.
What to aim for
Mastery is 80% accuracy on a skill's quiz. Your child gets one retry (two attempts total); if 80% still isn't reached, the skill is reassigned the next day.
Habits that lead to success
Write your work out; it helps you think clearly and avoid mistakes.
Read carefully, use the learning tools when you need help, and try your best on every question. (Video to get support when a problem feels tricky.)
The more carefully you work, the more XP you’ll earn. XP is about accuracy, not speed.
Close other tabs and games, give Freckle your full attention.
Practice a little every day. The more you practice, the more XP you’ll earn and the stronger your skills will grow.
How to tell it's working
Steady XP and mastered skills (80%+) are the signs. Rising XP means careful, correct answers. Time spent but flat XP usually means rushing or guessing; a nudge to slow down and use the help tools brings it back.
Common Issues | FAQs
Where do I find Freckle's username and password?
TimeBack shows them in a pop-up right before Freckle launches. Choose “I'm a Student” on the Freckle login screen.
My child finished a lesson but didn't master it or earn XP
Mastery is 80%+. Below that, click “Try again” (one retry, two attempts total). If still short, Freckle reassigns it the next day; K–3 may add Zearn lessons. ELA XP is earned only at 80%+, one point per correct answer.
Which card should my child work first?
Start top-left, left to right, one skill at a time. ELA = red cards, math = blue.
Freckle says the account is locked, or the login won't work
This is on our side, not something your child did. Reach out through Alphie and we'll unlock it. Use the TimeBack credentials and choose “I'm a Student.”
My child's Freckle has no assignments
Make sure the To-Do tab is selected, not Done. If it's still empty across a full day, reach out, assignments may not have been pushed yet.
What is the monitor password for the Star Assessments (Star Early Literacy, Star Reading, Star Math, Star CBM)
STAR Math is not part of the kids' app stack for now so they don't need to work on it, and we don't provide the monitor passwords for that.
For Renaissance - they only need to work on Freckle (if that is their assigned Language app).
