Getting Started with Speechify Desktop App

Speechify reads text aloud so you can listen instead of (or alongside) reading. This guide will show you how to set it up and use it every day in your learning apps.

Step 1: Install & Set Up Speechify

  1. Download the Speechify desktop app and install it on your computer.

  2. Create an account (or log in if you already have one).

  3. Open Speechify, you'll see a small icon in your taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac). Keep it running in the background while you work.

First-Time Settings to Check

Once you're logged in, go to Speechify Settings and set:

  • Voice, pick one you like the sound of, e.g., Geffen

  • Speed, start at 1x (normal pace) and increase as you get comfortable

Step 2: How Speechify Works with Your Learning Apps

Method 1: Use keyboard shortcuts

Use this when you want Speechify to read all the text on your current screen, an instruction, a passage, or a question.

  1. Select the text you want Speechify to read aloud

  2. Press Option + A (Mac) or Alt + A (Windows) to read the selected text

  3. If the text is not selectable, press Option + X (Mac) or Alt + X (Windows) to select an area of the screen to read

Method 2: Access features from the top bar

Use this when you only want part of the text read aloud, for example, one question or one paragraph in the middle of a page.

  1. Click and drag your mouse to highlight just the text you want

  2. Look for "Play Selected Text". You can also adjust the settings by selecting "Open Speechify".

šŸŽ® Controlling Playback

Once Speechify is reading, a small floating player will appear on your screen. You can:

Button / Key
