Installing StudyReel

StudyReel is the core software application your child will use to manage their daily academic tasks in the Alpha Anywhere learning program. This guide walks you through the installation process with both written instructions and video support.

Important: Screen Recording Permissions

What You'll See

During installation, your Mac or PC will request permissions for:

  • Screen recording/capture

  • Audio access

  • Camera access

What StudyReel Actually Uses

StudyReel only requires screen recording permission. The audio and camera permissions are requested by the system, but are NOT actively used by StudyReel for passive data collection in the Alpha Anywhere home program.

Note: Audio and camera features are school-only functionality. When using StudyReel at home, these features will not engage, even though you must accept the permission request to complete installation.

Why Screen Recording is Required

StudyReel needs screen recording permission to:

  • Capture what's happening on the computer during learning sessions

  • Drive accurate data collection for progress tracking

  • Monitor academic activity (similar to screen capture tools)

Important: You must accept the screen recording permission for StudyReel to function properly.

Installation Best Practices

1. Multiple Computer Setup

StudyReel can be installed on more than one computer, but only use one instance at a time. Running StudyReel simultaneously on multiple devices may cause data sync issues.

2. Dedicated Learning Computer (Recommended)

While not required, we recommend having a dedicated computer for your child's learning to:

  • Minimize distractions from personal apps and files

  • Create a consistent learning environment

  • Simplify data tracking and progress monitoring

This setup is your preference and not mandatory for the program to work effectively.

3. Data Collection Scope

Understanding what StudyReel tracks:

  • Recording happens ONLY while StudyReel is running - When the application is closed, no data collection occurs

  • Only screen activity is recorded - Audio and camera are not used

  • Purpose of data collection - Screen recordings drive progress tracking, mastery verification, and personalized learning path adjustments

Troubleshooting

Permission Issues

If you accidentally deny screen recording permission during installation:

  • Mac: Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording, then enable StudyReel

  • PC: Go to Settings > Privacy > Screen Recording, then enable StudyReel

Multiple Installations

If you need to install on a second computer, simply download the installer again and repeat the process. Remember to only run one instance at a time.

Installation Problems

If you encounter issues during installation:

  1. Ensure you have administrator privileges on the computer

  2. Check that your operating system is up to date

  3. Temporarily disable antivirus software during installation

  4. Contact support with specific error messages

Next Steps

Once StudyReel is successfully installed and permissions are granted, you're ready to begin the learning program. The application will guide you through initial setup and your child's first learning session.
