Taking a Break, Traveling, or Missing School Days: What You Need to Know

Updated over a week ago

Short Breaks (A Few Days to a Week)

For absences of a few days, there is nothing you need to do. Your child can skip those days and pick up where they left off. Their assignments, lessons, and progress will all be waiting in Dash.

There is no penalty, no lost progress, and no need to make up missed days. You do not need to notify us.

If your child wants to work ahead before a break, they can complete any lessons available in Dash that day. Dash refreshes every four hours, so new lessons may appear throughout the day. During the bracketing phase this flexibility is more limited, since tests unlock on a daily schedule. Once your child is on Skill Plan lessons, there is more room to work ahead.

Traveling but Want to Keep Learning

Your child can learn from anywhere with a Mac or Windows laptop and internet access. iPads and Chromebooks do not work with StudyReel.

If you are bringing a different computer than usual, download StudyReel on it before you leave. See "How to Download and Install StudyReel" for help.

Open StudyReel first, then log into Dash from within it. Progress tracks normally. If your child is in a MAP Growth testing window, tests unlock at 4 AM US Central Time daily regardless of your time zone.

Traveling During MAP Growth Testing

If you have travel planned during a MAP Growth testing window, let us know as soon as possible. Options include having your child test during the makeup week (Week 2), testing on the road if you have a compatible device and stable internet, or working out an alternate plan if the entire window conflicts with your travel.

Reach out so we can coordinate. We do not want your child to miss a testing window without a plan in place.

For more about MAP Growth testing, see "MAP Growth Testing: What It Is, When It Happens & What Your Child Should Expect."

Extended Breaks (Multiple Weeks or Longer)

Contact us at [email protected] before deciding. We can walk you through billing options and help make a plan.

What happens to your child's data:

Returning within 90 days: All progress is preserved. They pick up where they left off.

Returning after 90 days: Learning data resets and your child goes through bracketing again to re-establish placement.

Returning After a Break

Email us at [email protected]. We will reactivate your child's account and confirm their learning plan is current.

Common Questions

Do I need to notify you if my child misses a day or two?

No. Short absences do not require any action. Your child's work will be waiting when they return.

Can my child work ahead to bank days before a trip?

To some extent. Your child can complete all available lessons in Dash on any given day, and Dash refreshes throughout the day with new content. During bracketing this is more limited since tests unlock daily. On Skill Plan lessons there is more flexibility. There is no way to bank an entire week of work in one day.

What if we are gone for two or three weeks?

If you have a compatible device, we encourage your child to keep learning while away, even on a lighter schedule. If that is not possible, they can simply resume when you return.

My child is sick today. What should I do?

Nothing. Your child can rest and come back to their work when they feel better. If they are in a MAP Growth testing window and miss a test day, they can make it up during the retake week.

We need to step away for a while. Will we lose everything?

If your child returns within 90 days, all progress is preserved. After 90 days, they will go through bracketing again. Either way, reach out and we will make sure the transition back goes smoothly.
