MAP Growth Testing: What It Is, When It Happens & What Your Child Should Expect

What MAP Growth Is

MAP Growth is a standardized assessment from NWEA that Alpha Anywhere uses to measure your child's academic progress over time. It is given three times per year: fall, winter, and spring.

MAP Growth is different from the MAP Screener your child took when they enrolled. The Screener is a shorter diagnostic used to assess readiness and build an initial learning plan. It does not appear in Dash and is not used for growth tracking. MAP Growth is the longer assessment that establishes your child's official baseline and measures progress from one testing window to the next.

The MAP Screener Test typically takes most students between 20 to 40 minutes to complete. If a test is completed in under 15 minutes, it may indicate that the student rushed through it.

Why MAP Growth Matters

Alpha Anywhere's goal is for every student to achieve 2x growth, meaning your child grows at twice the rate of a typical student their age nationally, as measured by NWEA standards. MAP Growth is how that progress is measured.

For new students, the first MAP Growth test establishes a baseline. Growth will not be reported until your child has taken at least two MAP Growth tests, for example a winter baseline followed by spring results. The 2x growth measurement compares your child's progress against national norms for students of the same age and grade.

When MAP Growth Happens

Testing occurs three times per year, and each window spans approximately two weeks. Tests become available each day at 4 AM US Central Time.

Spring 2026 MAP Growth Schedule

Week 1: Testing (May 19-22)

One subject is tested per day. Each test is only available on its scheduled day. If your child misses their test day, they will not be able to take that subject later in the same week, but they will have the opportunity during retesting week instead.

  • Tuesday, May 19: Reading

  • Wednesday, May 20: Math

  • Thursday, May 21: Language

  • Friday, May 22: Science

Week 2: Retesting (May 26-29)

  • Monday, May 25: No testing

  • Tuesday, May 26: Math retesting only

  • Wednesday, May 27 through Friday, May 29: Open retesting for any subject

Students can use retesting week to take any test they missed during Week 1, or to retake a test they want to improve on. If your child retests, the higher of the two scores is recorded. There is no downside to retesting.

Streaks During MAP Testing

Your child's learning streaks are protected during both testing and retesting weeks, as long as they complete their scheduled MAP tests. Regular lessons are optional during this period. MAP tests are the priority.

Results

MAP Growth results are not available immediately. They are released after the full testing window (including retesting week) closes. See "Understanding Your Child's MAP Growth Results" for details on where to find scores and what they mean.

Do All Students Take MAP Growth?

Yes. Every Alpha Anywhere student takes MAP Growth during each testing window, including students who are still in the bracketing phase.

If your child is still bracketing, MAP Growth does not replace or interfere with that work. On MAP testing days, the MAP test is the priority. Your child can continue with bracketing if they want to, but completing the MAP test is the only expectation for that day.

Before Testing: What You Need to Do

Before each MAP Growth window, you may receive an email asking you to select your child's grade level for the upcoming test and indicate any accommodations your child may need. Please complete this promptly.

If you are unsure which grade to select, use your child's age-based grade level (the grade they would be in at a traditional school), not the level they are currently working at in Alpha Anywhere.

How Your Child Takes the Test

  1. Open Timeback as usual.

  2. Log in to Timeback Anywhere.

  3. Look for the "MAP Growth Test" Section at the top of your screen and click the subject block.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to launch the test through NWEA's platform.

  5. Your child's name will appear in a dropdown list. Select it to begin.

A few things worth knowing before your child sits down:

MAP Growth tests are not timed. Your child should take as long as they need. We recommend at least 40 minutes per subject, ideally more, to read carefully and think through each question.

Typically, the MAP Growth Test takes about 40 minutes per subject, though this may vary slightly depending on the student's pace.

Each test has approximately 40 to 43 questions per subject.

The test is adaptive. Correct answers lead to harder questions; missed answers lead to easier ones. This is intentional. The test is calibrated to reach about 50% accuracy because it is finding your child's true level. Many students feel the test was very hard or that they did not do well, even when their results are accurate and strong. That is completely normal.

If your child completes a test unusually quickly, such as under 15 minutes for the screener test, it may indicate they rushed. Encourage them to take their time and carefully read each question.

We recommend your child complete no more than one MAP test per day.

What to Tell Your Child

The adaptive nature of the test can catch students off guard, so it helps to prepare them.

  • "The test is supposed to get hard. That means it's finding your real level."

  • "You're not expected to get everything right. Getting about half right is actually a great sign."

  • "Take your time. Read every question carefully. There's no time limit."

  • "If you get stuck, eliminate answers you know are wrong and make your best guess."

Is MAP Growth Mandatory?

Yes. MAP Growth is a required part of the Alpha Anywhere program and is how your child's progress toward 2x growth is measured.

Retesting during Week 2 is optional for students who already completed all their tests in Week 1. Some families choose to retake a test to try for a higher score. If your child retests, the higher of the two scores is recorded. There is no downside to retesting.

If your child completed a test during Week 1 and sees the same test appear during retesting week, they do not need to take it again unless they want to.

Common Questions

My child is still bracketing. Should they take MAP Growth?

Yes. On MAP testing days, the MAP test is the priority. Your child can continue with bracketing if they choose to, but completing the MAP test is the only expectation for that day.

My child just started. Will they have 2x growth results?

Not yet. 2x growth requires at least two MAP Growth tests to compare. Your child's first test sets the baseline, and growth will be measured at the next testing window.

We can't make one of the testing days. What do we do?

That's fine. Week 2 is specifically for students who missed a test or want to try again. Exact retesting dates and subject availability will be shared before the window opens.

Do students earn Alphas for MAP testing?

Yes. Students earn Alphas for completing MAP Growth tests. These are typically awarded after results are finalized, usually the week after the testing window closes. Students who score in higher percentiles earn additional Alphas.
