What StudyReel Is and Why It Is Required
StudyReel is the application that records your child's learning sessions. It must be open every time your child sits down to learn. Without it running, completed lessons will not be tracked, progress will not appear in Dash, time will not be recorded, and the blue border confirming active tracking will not appear.
System Requirements
StudyReel works on Mac and Windows computers no older than roughly five years.
It does not work on Chromebooks, iPads, tablets, Android devices, phones, or Linux computers. There is no workaround for unsupported devices. You will need a compatible Mac or Windows machine before your child can start.

Installation Steps
Open the installer file from your Downloads folder. You will see a welcome screen. Click "Begin Setup."
When prompted, click "Sign In" and enter your child's program credentials.
Email: [email protected] (from your enrollment invitation, with a period between first and last name)
Password: iloveschool (case-sensitive)
Grant permissions when prompted. Click "Allow" for each request. StudyReel needs three permissions to function:
Screen Recording: Required for tracking. Without it, the blue border will not appear and work will not be recorded.
Audio Permission: Used for school features only. Not active during home use.
Camera Permission: Used for school features only. Not active during home use.
On Windows, StudyReel walks you through each permission automatically. Click "Next" to proceed. On Mac, you will need to enable permissions manually through System Preferences. StudyReel will prompt you for each one:
Audio: Click "Allow Audio Recording" in the app, then find StudyReel in the Microphone list in System Preferences and toggle it on.
Camera: Click "Allow Camera Recording" in the app, then find StudyReel in the Camera list and toggle it on.
Screen Recording: Check that Screen Recording shows a green checkmark in the app. If not, go to System Preferences, then Privacy & Security, then Screen Recording, and make sure StudyReel is checked.
Mac permissions are the most common source of installation problems. If something is not working after install, check these first.
Wait for installation to complete. This typically takes 2 to 5 minutes. Do not close the window or turn off the computer. A brief pause during installation is normal.
Enter your child's age and current grade level when prompted, then click "Complete Setup."
StudyReel will open automatically. You should see a blue border around the screen. This confirms tracking is active and your child's work will be recorded. If the border is not there, Screen Recording permission is not enabled. Return to Step 3 and check that setting.
Troubleshooting
The installer won't open.
On Mac, right-click the file and select "Open" instead of double-clicking. If macOS still blocks it, go to System Preferences, then Privacy & Security, and click "Open Anyway." On Windows, if Windows Defender blocks the file, click "More info" and then "Run anyway."
StudyReel installed but there's no blue border.
Screen Recording is not enabled. On Mac, go to System Preferences, then Privacy & Security, then Screen Recording, and toggle StudyReel on. Quit and reopen StudyReel after making that change.
I keep getting an "unable to open app" error.
Fully quit StudyReel (quit the application, not just close the window), restart your computer, and try again. If the error persists, uninstall StudyReel, restart, then download and reinstall from the links above.
I've reinstalled multiple times and it still doesn't work.
If you have reinstalled more than twice without success, the issue is likely a permissions or compatibility problem specific to your computer. Contact the Parent Experience Team and have the following ready: your computer type (Mac or Windows), the operating system version, the exact error message, and whether another computer in the household works.
It works on one computer but not another.
Compare the permission settings between the two machines. On Mac, check System Preferences, then Privacy & Security, and confirm StudyReel is enabled for Screen Recording, Microphone, and Camera on the non-working computer.
Can I use a Chromebook or tablet?
No. StudyReel requires a Mac or Windows desktop or laptop. Chromebooks, tablets, and phones are not supported, and there is no workaround.
